Apple May Be Planning a Second Foldable iPhone — This Time With a Clamshell Design
Apple may not have officially launched its first foldable iPhone yet, but the company is already exploring what could come next. According to industry insights, Apple is considering a compact clamshell-style foldable iPhone, similar in design to Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip lineup.
The idea was highlighted in a recent industry newsletter, which suggested that Apple is testing the waters with a square-shaped foldable phone that folds vertically. However, the project is still in its early stages, and there is no guarantee that it will ever reach consumers.
Apple Eyes Competition With Galaxy Z Flip and Motorola Razr
If Apple moves forward with a clamshell foldable iPhone, it would signal the company’s confidence in competing directly with established foldable devices such as the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7 and Motorola’s latest Razr models.
The move also suggests that Apple expects strong demand for its first foldable iPhone, which is widely rumored to debut later this year. By planning future models early, Apple appears eager to capitalize on momentum if its initial foldable device proves successful.
Clamshell Foldable iPhone Prototypes Already Exist
This isn’t the first time reports have surfaced about Apple experimenting with clamshell foldable designs. Earlier information revealed that Apple had already developed internal prototypes using this form factor, indicating long-term interest rather than a sudden shift in strategy.
At the same time, Apple is reportedly exploring larger foldable devices as well. One concept under consideration involves a book-style foldable that opens horizontally, offering a tablet-like experience.
Larger Foldable iPhone or iPad-Style Device Faces Delays
Previously, Apple was said to be working on a foldable device closer in size to an iPad. However, technical challenges related to durability, display quality, and design reportedly slowed development. As a result, any large-screen foldable from Apple may not arrive until 2029 or later.
What This Means for Apple’s Foldable Strategy
Apple’s exploration of both small clamshell foldables and larger book-style devices shows a cautious but strategic approach to the foldable market. Rather than rushing to release multiple models, the company appears focused on refining designs and gauging consumer response before committing fully.
While none of these devices are confirmed, Apple’s growing interest in foldable technology signals that the company is preparing for a future where foldables play a bigger role in its product lineup.
